More than 130 international experts in hypoxia are going to gather today and tomorrow in the high-level international conference ‘Hypoxia, Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Translation’, within the sessions of the ‘Seville Molecular Medicine Workshop’. This arena will allow advancing in the understanding of molecular mechanisms and in the treatment of low level of oxygen in the body (Hypoxemia): a problem that affects millions of people worldwide, which can cause serious neurological and cardiovascular effects.

This meeting will be held in the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS), located within the premises of Virgen del Rocío University Hospital. The institution is supported by the Andalusian Regional Ministry for Equity, Health and Social Policies, the Andalusian Regional Ministry for Innovation, Sciences and Businesses, the University of Seville and the Spanish National Research Council. The porgramme of the meeting comprises papers from 16 worldwide leaders in the area, plus 11 oral communications and 34 scientific posters.

This event, together with the recent publication of several scientific publications on the filed in high-impact journals and the obtainment of a Project of Excellence from the Spanish Institute of Health Carlos III, reinforces the IBiS as an international reference in hypoxia. Besides, this event is carried out within the framework of the project ITRIBIS (‘Improving Translational Research Potential at the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville’), a Coordination and Support Action funded by the Capacities European Call FP7-REGPOT-2012-2013-1, aimed for scientific quality institutions.
ITRIBIS, has a duration of 36 months and has been running since 1st of July 2013. Besides, an international external evaluation after this period will permit the institution to obtain a quality recognition, which will be a great asset for the obtainment of future regional, national and international research funds.
